The Malalasekera Dictionary is their most famous publication. The latest edition, has been extensively revised and greatly expanded by a panel of distinguished scholars to meet the needs of a technologically advanced and computer literate public and is in par with all international dictionaries. The Malalasekera Dictionary was first published in 1948 by M.D. Gunasena and Company (Private) Limited. It played an invaluable role in providing skills in English for the educated young of a new nation. The importance of this pioneering work has been vouched for by the fact that its sales far exceed those of any other dictionary published in Sri Lanka.

WHO ESTABLISHED MD GUNASENA?
Born into a farming family, M D Gunasena, the youngest of three sons was sent to a school in Colombo with the hopes of benefitting from an English education. It was then that a young Gunasena found a fascination with printers at the various establishments. However it paved the way to pursue his budding interest in printing at the Boys` Industrial School, an orphanage attached to a printing press. It also afforded him the opportunity to continue his studies under English and Sinhala pundits and laid the foundation for his career. Since taking over the management of a printing press in 1913, M D Gunasena continues its legacy with the business remaining within the family.
