Historically the general belief is that the Present Buddhist Temple is the location where King Siri Sangabodhi (9th century AD ) a Sinhala King well known for his righteousness , kindness and religious piety. The famous story of King Siri Sanga bo is recorded in detail in two ancient literary works one in Pali and one in Sinhala According to the historical records, he gave up the Crown after about three years as king for the sake of his ambitious brother, Gothabhaya who waged war against him and came to reside as a an ascetic in the forest at Attanagalla. His brother who became King wanted t to see the end of his brother Siri Sangabo so that his claim to the throne is unchallenged. So he declared that any one who will bring Siri Sangabo’s head will be given a cash prize of One Thousand gold coins. A poor lonely traveler from Anuradhapura on his way to somewhere beyond Attanagalle stopped at Attanagalle to take a rest and even shared his meal with Siri Sangabo. When he related the story of the cash to given on his head, out of sympathy for the poor man and as gratitude for the meal he gave him, Sirisngabo donated his head to that poor traveler. (He could separate his Head just by drawing a line round his neck and pulling it up wards all due to the power of his righteousness and piety.) The traveler took his head to the King, the King himself and country were shaken by the generosity and piety of Siri Sanagabo that he was given Royal Funeral thereafter (The man who brought the Head would have collected the prize). He became a national heard and a symbol of righteousness in the ruling of the country. Thereafter name of Sirl Sangabodhi became a title which many other kings thereafter adopted prior to their names. The story is one of the most well known historical tales of Sri Lanka. Although historians are of the view that the Attanagalle is a place close Anuradhapura, this Attanagalle had been known for a long time as the place where King Siri Sangabo donated his head. Attanagalle is located in an area known for coconut estates.
